[i]Folks,
Do you think we need FAQ pages in SPUG?

not really, cos i think that everyone is so helpful :D so not necessary for FAQ page but some ads like where JasonNg palmworkshop and contact number might be good cos everyone needs a little emergency on the spot type of help every now and then :D

But wouldn't harm if we had them! :D
More complete too...
Hope Jeff puts them in after the site revamp?
BTW must tell us when revamping so we can all stop posting first... :p

Believe is better to have SPUF FAQ page because the members keep on asking similiar questions :( After couple of weeks, the same questions keep on raise up!
Of course there are so many 'warm-heart' senior member to answer those newbies questions but will you answer the same questions more than 10 times?
Does not seem any problemm for SPUG to have own FAQ pages.

agree with Kylin.. Cos actually our Palm Help Room could be streamlined towards more specific cases of distraught Palmers having difficulties with their Palm...
So they won't need to ask about Smilies(like how i asked) and other trivial information. Jason and Jeffrey? How about including that in your SPUG website revamp? :)

Smiles answers are already in FAQ what...never read...hehe :)
Well...FAQ is a good idea. However, we need people to edit/verify/do layout/blah blah...with whatever raw info we have...that's the tricky part...

Kylin volunteer to do the 'edit' and verify parts ! :D
Understand that we short of member power, is easy to talk and submit the ideas but tough to work it up! :(

thanks for the FAQs, answered a lot of my questions.

Well.. as a newbie, I was wondering what in the world happens after I fill up the registration form to become a SPUG member.
Will there some kind of confirmation/reply??
And when?
And how to access the members' page that is mentioned somewhere in registration page.
thanks!

Actually what alora said does makes sense, when i first signed up, did not recieve a confirmation email or anything so became very blur .... took a while to adapt.
perhaps an confirmation email could be sent to pple who sign up as members with links in the email to FAQs pages on SPUG website :D

yah.. that's what made me blur too
I eventually found the FAQS under Features.
I know it says that SPUG members will be informed of meetings, events etc..
but still feel like nothing really happened after signing up as a SPUG member... hmmmm maybe not yet
And I still haven't figured out whether the Members page mentioned in the SPUG Registration Page is the same Members page here in SPUG Forums. (the little icon with 5 little people up on the top right corner of the Forum page)

Alrite here's the deal.
Whenever there is a PBG (Palm Beaming Gathering)session, where pda users all come to beam and network with each other, there will be someone to start a thread like example "PBG at BUGIS this weekend [date] or something like that
following that thread a name list will be created together with details regarding the event .
people who wanna come will just leave their names by quoting the previous post and adding their names to the list
then you just show up at the time & place for the PBG .
Just so you know there is no email being sent out to you to inform you of any PBG sessions :D
You can find most of this PBG threads in the " OFF-TOPIC CHAT" section of the forum
:D many good times ahead and hope to see you soon.:D

I second the opinion of enhancing our FAQ section
This will help us answer a lot of repeated question. Question like " How to setup my Palm to surf the web/read email", "How do I use my Palm to send Logo/ringtone?" "How do I read Etext?" etc etc always comes out as new thread and personally I found it difficult to answer each and everyone of them since after a while you will just get sick of it. Currently we are having our FAQ section under Features, which I think it's not really clear-cut and obvious enough. It would be best if we can creat a seperate tag for FAQ so that SPUGer will go there and look for answer before posting questions on Help Page. That will decrease our work load significantly.
Getting model answer for FAQ out won't be too difficult as well. We can have someone getting a topic and wirte on it the circulate around senior members to check for errors and put in new suggestions. A final copy can be proof-read by the internet committee which is then finalize and post on our site. The FAQ section is best catorgrised so that SPUGer can have a easier time to sort out information. I am sure that we all have a lot of experience to share, so let's share them in a much easier way:D

Hmmm,.. whatever happened to the <b>SPUGKB</b>??? It started but then it faded away,.... Perhaps we can start it again,.. I still have the original e-mails,... we distributed amongst ourselves what we would write about and submitted it to a central authority,....

<b>SPUGKB</b> was an initiative started last year. It actually stands for <B>SPUG Knowledge Base</b>. Shall we start it all over again??

This SPUGKB project was put on hold due to a lack of resources and FAQ/KB engine.
We are still sourcing for a good FAQ/KB engine. Let me know if you know of any good engine.

Can we start accumulating the information whilst design/search for an engine?? At least this way we can develop the idea, requirements and needs as we go along. Worst case, we can just make do with html listings??
btw, I kinda like the Toshiba way of doing it. They tell the user to ask a question in Plain English.

What kinda engine we need? To start with, I think all we need is a simple webpage. All we need to do is to categorize what we know eg. IR, Database, Reset etc etc then let the user browser through them. I think that should be simple enough with the advantage of letting the user find what they want, instead we helping them doing the fine job.

Sure that sounds good. Currently I have tasked Viboon to lead this FAQ/KB project. You guys may want to send all you have to him for consolidation. :)

O yea thats what I want for SPUG too. :) But do you know that'll be a very complex FAQ/KB search engine? :D

Shall we start recruitment again,... There have been many new SPUG members since then,.. I think it's best to let as many people as possible contribute. We can start off with the broad topics such as by model, process, tricks and Errors. Afer which we divide them into many various sub-topics. I intend to contribute as much as I can,....
Hopefully we can make it the <b>most comprehensive</b> KB available on the Internet!!!
Cheers

A database explaining all the common seen error message in Palm eg. Memory Overflow, memory exec error etc etc would be nice to start with. I myself never knew what the no. behind all these message means:D

We've discussed this quite a number of times and some members actually put in quite a bit of effort to start the Knowledge Base thingy.
Primary difference I need to highlight to all is that a Knowledge Base is different from a FAQ. The latter is easier to implement with the contribution from members in doing up the FAQ.
The KB however requires a strong engine to do justice. This is where members ask questions, the engine "dissect" it and searches for an answer. Then it display the results, many times with a percentage of how close it thinks the answer relates to the question.
Such KB engines are only avail commercially now and cost more than a bomb (some AI programming involved) !!
