Review of palmOne Treo 650
By Alvin Chang

I have been a very satisfied and happy Treo 600 user since October 2003. The Treo 600 has made my life much easier and I no longer carry around a mobile phone AND a handheld device.

When Handspring (the creators of the Treo 600 before they were acquired by Palm Inc., in end-2003) first conceived the Treo 600, they targeted it plainly at only one group of users who would appreciate its efficient user interface the most – business users who needed to access to the Internet and to their data whilst on the move.

This strategy led to the most glaring fault of the Treo 600 – its outdated color screen. As I’ve mentioned in my earlier review of the Treo 600, the biggest downside was the low-res, 11.5 bit colour screen, which was an inexplicable design choice, given that back in Oct 2003, high-res, 16 bit colour screens were already commonplace.

Having said that, the Treo 600’s usefulness still meant that all my other PDAs and mobile phones had been rendered totally redundant. The Treo 600 became my daily use device, and took over all the other functions which I required from my mobile phone and PDA, and amongst other, my CLIE NX80 and Zodiac 2 were eventually disposed of, as I no longer used them often enough to justify their presence.

When news first broke that palmOne was updating the Treo 600 (to include a high-res screen), I was overjoyed and waited patiently to get my grubby hands on one – which I finally did a few days ago, and I’m pleased to say, the Treo 650 is everything the Treo 600 was, and more.

Design and finish

The Treo 650 looks almost identical to the Treo 600. I’ve been using the review unit for four days now, and no one has noticed that I’m carrying a different device.

That’s not such a bad thing at all, in fact, I believe the design choice was an intentional one. The Treo 600’s body was almost perfect for me, and in my opinion, has not been surpassed yet by any other handheld device. The presence of the antenna, however (even if slightly reduced in size) still irks me a little.

The Treo 650’s casing is made of plastic, like the Treo 600, but spray-painted with a darker metallic grey colour, with a smooth matte finish, plus silver accents. I think it looks and feels classier compared to the Treo 600, which felt a bit plasticky at times.

Upon closer inspection, there are several noticeable differences. Firstly, the Treo 650 is slightly thicker (about 1 mm), and noticeably heavier. The official specs list the Treo 650 at 178 grams, about 10 grams heavier than the Treo 600. But if you have been carrying the Treo 600 around the last few months, you will notice the additional heft. If you’re a new user, then it is noticeably heavier than most mobile phones around. It still fits snugly into my pants pocket, though, and it’s never uncomfortable.

Next, the Treo 650 has a replaceable battery. The cover comes off very easily and snaps back securely, without any problems. palmOne also added a new button on the left side of the Treo 650, below the “up-down” volume rocker and removed the “on-off” button at the top, which was used to turn on/off the phone function on the Treo 600. The rest of the layout of the Treo 650 is very much similar to the Treo 600 and I won’t bother with the details, as these have been covered previously in various other forums.

Overall, the Treo 650 looks and feels very solidly constructed and its finish impeccable. Here are some pictures of the Treo 650 and the Treo 600 side by side, showing the differences between the two devices.

Thumbpad and buttons

The Treo 650 thumbpad is almost identical to the Treo 600, except that the “home” and “menu” buttons have been moved up next to the 5-way directional pad. The thumbpad keys are larger and flatter than the Treo 600’s and much more comfortable to type on. I find I make fewer mistakes with my typing now. The thumbpad is also much brighter when lit up in the dark, compared to the Treo 600.

The 5-way directional pad has been made slightly smaller, and the “home” and “menu” buttons now flank the 5-way. The remainder four hard buttons are now assigned to the “phone”, “calendar”, “messaging” and “on/off” applications / functions.

The blue “option” button, as in the Treo 600, can be used to access numbers on the thumbpad, and other keyboard characters, and alternate hard button applications.

The change of layout of the “home” and “menu” buttons confused me for a short while, but after four days’ use, I find it much more intuitive to have these two buttons at the top of the thumbpad, rather than at the bottom. palmOne thought this one out quite well.

The thumbpad is now my primary means of data entry and it’s ease of use (for me, at least) cannot be overstated. Frankly, I can’t even remember how to type SMSes using T9 anymore…

Display

In two words – totally beautiful. It’s bright, sharp, clear, and the colour balance is very good. It looks as good as the other Palm OS handhelds out there, e.g. the T3 and the Zires. Small fonts, etc, look great, and I can’t stop looking at the screen. Even the pictures of my little girl looks terrific!

Compared to the Treo 600, the old device looks totally obsolete. Here are some pictures comparing the two screens in bright and dark conditions.

This should have been the screen on the Treo 600, but oh well, at least palmOne has decided to finally resolve the Treo 600’s biggest flaw.

Camera/Video

This is the other significant improvement made by palmOne over the Treo 600. As most Treo 600 users would know, the camera on the Treo 600, whilst serviceable, was actually quite crappy at taking pictures, even in broad daylight.

This has been greatly improved in the Treo 650, especially in low-light conditions. Night photos are now possible, and even look acceptable. Colour balance has also been greatly improved, and pictures just look much better.

The resolution is still stuck at 640 x 480 though. No mega-pixel camera here, unfortunately. But the quality of the camera is untouched, and I believe it’s comparable to even the best mega-pixel phone cameras in the market, like the Nokia 7610.

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

The camera also doubles as a video capture device, and this is done quite admirably well too. The camera records video at 352 x 288 or 176 x 144 resolutions. Both pictures and videos can be recorded directly onto the SD expansion card, and is not limited by size. Pictures are captures in .jpg format, whilst video in .3gp format.

PIM functions and desktop synchronisation

The Palm OS version is Garnet, version 5.4.5, and the built-in PIM apps are similar to the Tungsten T5’s. I won’t bother to cover the same in any further detail, as these apps have been previously discussed at length before. Suffice to say, the PIM apps work as advertised – which is quite well, and I’ve done away with my third party apps.

Desktop synchronization to Palm Desktop and Microsoft Outlook is available, but media like pictures and video will only be sync-ed with Palm Desktop. Outlook synchro is totally built-in, and Chapura Pocketmirror (which was used for the Treo 600) is no longer required. One advantage I’ve noticed from this is that, in the past, I had to start Outlook on my PC before Hotsync will sync (via Pocketmirror) with my desktop, but now this is no longer required. Much cleaner interface here.

Realplayer is built-in for playback of audio files as well. I’ve also tested most of my applications which I use with my Treo 600 and almost all of them work ok. These include iSilo 4.0, Tealdoc 5.56, Adobe Reader 3.0, MS Dict 4.10, MetrO 5.21, Kinoma Player 2.0, McFile 2.2b3, McPhling 5.0, ScreenShot 5, snapCalc5, Bejeweled 2 and Monopoly.

Here are some screenshots I’ve taken off the Treo 650 so far.

GSM connection

Like the Treo 600, the Treo 650 is also a quad-band GSM phone (850/900/1800/1900).

Mobile coverage and reception (using StarHub and Singtel) seems no different from the Treo 600, although network recovery after disconnection is slightly faster, and dropped connections occur less frequently. Haven’t used this enough yet, so can’t really comment on this in detail.

Battery life

Battery life is rated at 6 hours talktime with 300 hours standby in the spec sheet. My usage patterns means that the device usually lasts about 2-3 days average for me, i.e. it will go the whole weekend for me without re-charging.

My initial thoughts on the battery life is that it’s quite similar to that of the Treo 600, which is very good to start with. Going my anecdotal evidence, this will definitely outlast a similarly configured PPC handheld, but not most mobile phones.

Memory system

The Treo 650 uses the new NVFS (non-volatile file system) memory system, which means that even if the battery is dead, all data remains intact, even for years after that. No more lost data after keeping your handheld in the drawer for too long!

However, the drawback is that the NVFS uses a minimum of 512 bytes per block of memory, i.e. if you have stored only 1 byte of information, say in a memo containing only the letter “Q” for example, that memo will take up 512 bytes of space. This means although there is 22 Mb of memory available out of the box, actual memory usage will differ significantly from previous palmOne devices.

This issue first occurred with the Tungsten T5 and has been discussed extensively in this and other forums as well. palmOne has in fact already promised a fix for this in due course, although no news yet on when this will be.

I discovered from my own tests that this “memory bloat” issue led to quite significant increases in the amount of space taken up by both my data files and applications. As a comparison, my Treo 600 used to have on average, about 12 to 13 Mb of free space, but on the same configuration (same apps and databases), my Treo 650 has only about 7 to 8 Mb of free space.

In my view, palmOne should have increased the amount of memory available out of the box on this one to at least 64 Mb.

Connectivity

The Treo 650 has GPRS, Infrared and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Bluetooth functions worked flawlessly in my tests with other mobile phones, and my SE HBH-65 head set.

GPRS connection over my Starhub account was also flawless in my tests, except for a software bug with the “web” program which kept re-dialling my Starhub MMS network connection rather than my GPRS connection. this prevented me from testing the web browser program. I managed to test the GPRS connection with VersaMail though, and my emails were downloaded and sent without any hitches. Very similar experience to my Treo 600 with SnapperMail. Haven’t managed to test out attachments to emails, etc, and will update this review when I’ve had the chance to do so at my own leisure.

Again, no Wi-Fi built-in for the Treo 650. Personally, I don’t need Wi-Fi, so it’s makes no difference to me. But I understand this irks quite a few people out there, so palmOne has, I believe, started working on drivers for their palmOne Wi-Fi SD card to make it compatible with the Treo 650.

Pricing

The Treo 600 is retailing for about $1188 without a telco contract, which is actually lower than the launch price for the Treo 600 back in Oct 2003. This is still somewhat beyond most people’s budget.

However, compared to the other devices that the Treo 650 is competing against, e.g. XDA Mini, XDA IIs, SE P910i, and the HP PPC smartphones, it does appear competitive. With added telco discount, it may cost less than $1000 eventually, and this will compare quite favourably with the above devices.

Conclusion

Having said all the above, I would highly recommend this device to any one who needs a combo device, or what the industry now likes to call “smartphone”. Its efficiency of use and simplicity makes it tough to beat compared to other mobile phones and similar smartphones in the market. The only caveat would be that, for present Treo 600 owners, the cost of upgrading may seem a little steep, given that the Treo 600 already cost them a bomb to start with.

All said and done, the Treo 600 was already a market leader, in my view, but the Treo 650 resolves it’s biggest flaw (the screen) and adds Bluetooth functionality as well. The Treo 650 is the best smartphone on the market, bar none.

Pros
• new high-res screen and Bluetooth (finally!)
• same efficient interface as Treo 600
• improved thumbpad
• still great design and size

Cons
• no Wi-Fi
• pricey

Great review of the TREO 650!!! I like the connectivity and the new improved screen & camera. However, having been a Palm user for 6 years now, i am curious about Windows Pocket Edition. Why? I saw the O2 xda mini, its a sexy device! Am considering between the 2 devices. Wonder if any folks out there can do a HEAD to HEAD comparison between TREO 650 and O2 xda mini? Thanks

one thing that just occurred to me, and which i forgot to point out in my review is this -> the connector at the bottom of the Treo 650 attaches to the USB sync cable by way of a "push-in, pull-out" mechanism, which in my view, will probably become much looser over time, although in my tests so far (maybe connect-reconnect a dozen or so times), it doesn't seem to be affected very much.

compared to the Treo 600, which utilised a metal catch on both sides of the connector, and which is a better option in the long run, this design choice seemed a little odd.

also, i discovered that the "red" on/off button on my review unit is a little "sticky" (needs a few presses sometimes before it reacts), which could be due to it being a production rather than retail unit.

further, i should add a caveat to my "estimated" telco pricing above - i've been notified that the telcos will probably be offering the Treo 650 at $1068 with a 2-year contract, so my guess that it'll be below $1000 won't take place for some time yet (if the Treo 600 pricing history is any indication).

finally, i cannot overstate the wonderful new screen. my comparison photos of the Treo 600 and 650 really (with hindsight) does not really do the new screen sufficient justice. pictures taken with the camera are much more vibrant and vivid compared to when they are viewed on the desktop. suffice to say, once you have managed to check one out yourself, you will be completely blown away. trust me on this one.

Would you be so kind as to extract the following files (using something like FileZ) and send them to shadowmite, our "Treo Hacker Extraordinaire" over at TreoCentral? not at all. SMSes are arranged in a convenient "chat" format, with all messages arranged according to each contact you have, including all SMSes sent to and from that contact's number.

contacts list search is also instantaneous, just like with all Palm OS devices i've used in the past.

Well, it was a great review. Tempted me so much to switch from Treo600 to 650, but honestly the two main plus, screen & B-Tooth isn't what i need for everyday life, so can bear with it....ok, no budget :P

Apart from the above comment, i must say Treo 600 (or now Treo 650) is the best PDA/Smartohone that i have used.

But coming back to budget, if only my current treo600 breakdown beyond repair...no second thought, Treo650 will the next gadget. :-)

Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi Sleepy,

You might wangt to stick to the Palm OS, I've switched to the xPhone II and is kind of regretting it now. Third party software are scarce and expensive IMO (esp. productivity and utilities), and the community's not as fantastic as what we have here at SPUG.

Stick with the palm OS, I'm thinking of getting a Treo 650 myself.

I like treo 650 with high res and bluetooth, that's really my dream phone. However, I got some users with poor comments on it, for example:

1) palm is rather support MMC than SD card, and both of them are using the same reader, so the contact point may have differentiation. Because of that, some users have the experience of making SD card damage in few days!!
2) many programs have conflict with the palm, so hard reset is frequently needed.

Point 1 is a non-issue. An MMC or SD card share a similar pin configuration. All card readers on the market allow MMC or SD card share the same slot. They adhere to defined standards and there should not be any such problem of "support MMC than SD card". They are essentially the same.

Going Qwerty over phones
The Treo 650 and Nokia 9300 show how smartphones can have PC-style Qwerty keyboards and are still pocketable, writes ROLAND LIM

THE decision on whether a smartphone should have a keyboard, like a PC, seems to split the general public into two distinct camps. I belong to the camp that appreciates a keyboard.

Smartphones: Both have sharp and bright screens that literally make the competitions' pale in comparison. The Treo 650 (above) sports a 320 x 320 pixel screen, while the Nokia 9300 boasts a 640 x 200 pixel screen
But wanting a keyboard also requires you to make a 'leap of faith' and accept the fact that these smartphones aren't going to be as lithe as most of their keyboard-less counterparts.

That said, two smartphones that I've spent some time with in the last week are fine examples of how smartphones can have PC-style Qwerty keyboards and still be comfortably pocketable.

PalmOne's latest incarnation of its flagship smartphone, the Treo 650, is one of the smaller smartphones around with a lovely Qwerty keyboard. Despite the fact that I don't exactly have the daintiest fingers, I found the keys just large enough and spaced far apart enough for either one or two thumb typing. They have an excellent feel, and there is a keyboard backlight to help you type in the dark.

While the Treo 650 has a touchscreen, the Palm OS interface on the Treo 650 has been engineered to allow you to navigate with the use of the keyboard and other navigation keys, thus rendering the use of a stylus unnecessary for most functions.

This makes it possible for one-handed operation, as it feels more like a normal mobile phone where you can reply to a message without needing to put down the beer in your other hand.

Then there's the Nokia 9300, the smallest version of the Finnish phone maker's line of brick-shaped Communicator smartphones. The Nokia 9300 sports some of the genes of its bigger brother, the Nokia 9500, but comes in a smaller package and lacks the Wi-Fi capability of the larger 'brick'.

However, the genes for the Nokia 9300 must have mutated along the way because the Nokia 9300's Qwerty keyboard certainly does not measure up to the one on its larger brother. The keys have little travel and a poor feel, especially the space bar.

On the other hand, the Nokia 9300 improves upon its predecessor in that it finally allows for two-thumb typing for people with larger hands, as the keyboard on the Nokia 9500 was certainly too wide to be able to hold the phone with both hands and type with your thumbs.

Better feel

Like all the Communicators, the Nokia 9300 does not have a touchscreen, and navigating through the menus is via a little four-way navigation slider at the bottom right corner of the keyboard.

While it does the job adequately, I felt that the navigation 'button' on the Nokia 9500 accorded a much better feel than the slider implemented on the Nokia 9300.

One of the most crucial benefits of going with either of these smartphones is that your address book entries are not limited to the 500 or 1,000 entries that most mobile phones are limited to.

The Palm operating system on the Treo 650 and the Nokia's Symbian operating system both do a good job of managing your contacts. However, access to the Nokia's contact database is slower and especially apparent when you are looking for a contact's mobile number when composing a new message. With my contact database of about a thousand entries, it took a couple of seconds before the contact list was pulled up.

Both these smartphones have sharp and bright screens that literally make the competitions' pale in comparison. The Treo 650 sports a 320 x 320 pixel screen, while the Nokia 9300 boasts a 640 x 200 pixel screen.

While the Nokia's wide screen is much appreciated especially for working on documents or messaging, because of the small 200 pixel height, viewing images on it either involves scrolling up and down, or simply results in the images being quite small.

The Treo 650's square screen on the other hand is capable of displaying a physically larger picture on its display.

But imaging is certainly not a focus of the Nokia 9300, for it does not come with an integrated camera. The Treo 650 has a 640 x 480 pixel camera, greatly improved over the previous model, the Treo 600. Among the photos from camera phones that I have seen, the Treo 650 produced the best pictures in low-light conditions.

The wireless Bluetooth implementation on both phones are basic. While they both do the job of being able to hook up with Bluetooth headsets and transfer business cards, don't expect any of the fancier functions found in SonyEricsson phones, such as the remote control feature that lets you take control of a Bluetooth-enabled computer's mouse.

Out of the box, the Nokia has the edge when it comes to storage space. It has 80 megabytes (MB) internal storage capacity, and my set came with a 128MB multimedia card. The Treo comes with 32MB of memory and has a card slot that takes Secure Digital (SD) cards.

However, it ships without any storage card. With prices of an SD card at less than $30 to consumers and considerably less to manufacturers, it would certainly have been nice for PalmOne to ship their flagship product with more memory, especially when the new file system on the Treo 650 has been in the news for being more inefficient, and you would imagine that customers of high-end smartphones are 'power users' who would have storage needs beyond the on-board 32MB.

Another cost-cutting 'feature' of both phones are the mono headsets that are shipped with both phones, instead of stereo headsets. These headsets certainly do not do justice to the MP3 and video music playback capabilities of both phones.

And to compound the problem, neither of the phones offers the usual 3.5 mm stereo jack that is required by normal headphones. The Nokia has its own proprietary 'POP port' interface, while the Treo 650 has a 2.5 mm stereo jack.

While adapters convert these jacks for use with normal stereo headphones are available separately, they are ungainly and certainly not as convenient as if normal 3.5mm stereo jacks were available on the phones.

Grouse

A major grouse I have with the Nokia 9300 and the entire Communicator line of products is the lack of a vibrator alert. I cannot even begin to fathom why Nokia would not include a silent alert for the Communicators, but it certainly makes them unique in that you would probably not find another phone on the market without a vibrator!

Both these smartphones show that having a keyboard on a smartphone does not involve a huge penalty in size and weight over normal mobile phones. However, they do demonstrate that not all keyboards are equal.

I realise that many users look at the whole package, and both the Communicator and Treo have their diehard fans. For me, since having a keyboard is one of the major reasons for stomaching the penalty in size and weight, my money is on the one with the better keyboard - the Treo 650.

they cant just support mmc onli...coz all their palms have SDIO support...without SD card support, u cant plug SDIO cards like wifi or VEO cam cards...palmone dun just support mmc...they support BOTH and its a must for WIFI cards...

no programs have conflicts with palm unless u install crap or u anyhow install...they most is just a soft reset...i can go for months without hard reset and weeks without a soft reset...(cough*unless i wanna play cheat in games...:P COUGH*!!)

Pocket PC and Windows Mobile hangs more...they lack of third party and they soft reset almost everyday...though not so sure about hard reset...

Any people comment on this? I intend to buy it within this few days, but.......... as I am still thinking to buy mini O2 or treo 650......still not yet decided.

actually they support SD more...coz the SD card can just fit in the hole...and no dust can get into it...while MMC is thinner, dust can get into it..hehe

The question asked was will the Treo support mp3, I said not, I didn;t say anything about 3rd party software not supporting it, I pressume the question meant that does the Treo "natively" support mp3. With regards to the 60k midi file, I suggest you check it out first or even try it out for yourself before dismissing my answer as false, I can personally back up my answer because I tried it.

I have a jabra 250. Will this phone work well with it? What can you do with the headset?
Example: Sony Ericsson phone and BT headset can do voice dialing, auto answer (when a phone call comes in, you hear a sound in the headset, then you can say answer or busy and it'll pickup or hangup)

Can BT on this phone do the same?

And can you PLEASE show what a picture in normal lighting of a close up shot? I wanted a camera to take pictures of price tags so I can reember what I saw. I want to see how clear a good vga camera can do.

More questions:

Did you use this on singular or sprint? I may have missed that part i the review.

Can I do IM with this? While I wont be doing much email on this, I would like to know if I can have like aol/icq/msn running on it. And if you know, how does singular(if you tested it on singular) charges for it? Per message or by time online or my ammount of data?

Hi, in your review and testing do you come across this problem that the Treo 650 sometimes get reset when you press the on button. What this means is that everything looks normal without knowing that the set is in a hung mode. only after it gets reset that you realised that there are a list of missed call and sms trying to contact you. Apparently I have mad this complain to technical support but todate they do not have an answers for me despite performing many hard reset. My set does not have any third party software.

Can anyone help or have a solution ? Thanks

PALMBUGG

The reason why they do not appear could be because in your contacts you did not categorise the handphone numbers under mobile. The persons handphone numbers have to be idetified as such as the SMS function will only call up telephone numbers under the mobile filed.

Edit the contacts list and tap the category field assosciated with the handphone number. You should see a drop down list of possible options like Main, home, work, Fax, mobile, etc... choose mobile.

Hi Mako140, someone shared in the Treo 650 forums that palmone don't enable the Treo 650 to use wifi is because of the commercial tie up with US telcos. If you look at the palmone site, you will see that there are quite a number of telcos bundling their treo 650 with a phone plan. Since US is palmone main market, thus allowing wifi would upset the telcos. You could try Shadowmite's hacked wifi driver if you really want to use the wifi card. Cheers.

Hi jm8753, but then why other PDA phone producer can do that. They too have US market. Is all abt connectivity mode that is available at the venue u r in. Hi, I will be upgrading fr Treo 600 to 650 next week and intend to use the same hotsynch ID in order to maintain my registered third party software esp Doc-To-Go. I heard some Treo600 softwares may not be compatible with Treo650 since it is low resolution? Wonder if there is any precautionary steps to avoid synching respective "non-compatible" softwares when hotsynch same ID to Treo650? Hope able to recv some pointers. Thks

You could visit this Treo 650 compatible software list @ http://www.palmfocus.com/treo650software.php

Thanks! Just to reconfirm.... since I intend to use the same hotsyn ID, wonder the following steps are correct:
1) setup handheld with ID
2) clear Treo 600 prc files in backup (copy in separate archive folder)
3) hotsync 1st with System "Handheld overides Desktop"; intention is to synch other data like Datebook, Contacts etc.
4) copy compatible Treo 650 prc files back in backup folder
5) hotsync again with System "Desktop overwrite handheld"

Wonder if this is so straight forward and most simple way to go round the handheld upgrade? Thanks

Confirmed this works for local Treo, though it is stated for GSM unlocked?

Upgrade mine just now. Make sure your charger is plugged in during the Firmware Upgrade. Doesn't allow me to proceed without plug in the AC adaptor.

No need to remove SIM card or SD card

yes- basic built in apps should remain in built in ram- no problems there.
But if u are greedy like me with tons of 3rd party stuff- u need the zen of stashing them in the sd.

Hi Ark19, u got a reply from PalmOne on the non-camera 650?
Hi mako140,
sorry for this very late reply...
There isn't any non-camera 650 for SG.

But I found an article on removing the camera from Treo 650.
Check it out here (http://discuss.treocentral.com/showthread.php?t=84979&page=1&pp=20&highlight=remove+camera)

What about ringtones? How many types does it have? Does Treo allow different ringtones for different groups of people? Any limit to the number of groups?

Hello Sir,

You could download your own ringtones if you wish and you can also assign different ringtones to all the contacts.

The memory of treo 650 is not that bad and it does have an external mem.

Hey chewingyu,

In future do post in the Palm Help Room instead. Most people only come to this forum to read reviews.

Have you already started syncing your Treo 650 yet?

Well, moderator could have transferred my question or at least alert me to post my question there.

No point syncing when there is no data! All data wiped out remember?

lefei was just trying to help, albeit a bit late.

You posted in the wrong forum, did not give enough information on what were you looking for..."how does one transfer files from Vx to Treo 650?" - too general & vague...

...and now with a seemingly bitter tone, you are complaining about the mod?

I might be wrong, since i cannot "hear" what you have typed, i can only guess from the words that you have used. And from what i read, it kind of makes me think that you are certainly not endearing yourself to anyone over here.

Perhaps you feel strongly that SPUGers should come to your aid, everytime?

i'm sorry about the loss of your info in your Vx, but if you have hotsync-ed with "backup" enabled in the conduits recently, they are still in your C:\Program Files\Palm\your username\Backup folder.

Nah, I was not bitter at all. Just voicing out a little frustration and did not mean to dismiss Lefei's offer to help.

I would like to explain a little more of what happened but I think I will let the matter rest.

Thanks anyway...

How does Treo 650 measure up as a phone? for example, I know it doesn't have the "message sent" message after sending sms. Does it hang or crash or lose connectivity as a phone?

The Treo 650 is the best. I bought it and have been using it since it was out in Singapore! Try it!

Went to exchange my 650 cos the keyboard backlight was going crazy. Called the Palm CS, got the number and did my exchange.

Today, to my horror, I discovered that I had gotten a faulty set. The outside was perfect and scratchless, but the button "O" did not work.

Called Palm CS again to make noise but I still had to drop off my PDA at Tangs. Have to wait 5 working days so they can send me a "flawless" one. Or so they say.

Word of advise for those who goes for the exchange: check out as much as u can when you're at the counter.

Few things I've noticed about the 650 that was exchanged:

The ring/slience button diagram: My old 650 had an outline pic for the ringing symbol but the new one had a solid/shaded ringing symbol.

The blinking led is very much brighter than my old one.

That's about the only things I noticed in the few hours that I had the new 650.

The Treo 650 flashes a "Message Sent" box when you send out SMS messages. The sent message is then captured as part of a message thread with the other party which is a wonderful way to view your messages :thumb: .

The Treo 650 will never be as stable as one of those basic mobile phones that allow for nothing more than calls and SMSes. But as a PDA phone, I'm pretty satisfied with the Treo's stability. I'm always 'wasting' lots of money buying new phones and PDAs, looking for that perfect device. After getting the Treo, I haven't had to do that for a while. The Treo is by no means perfect but in my view, it's currently the best convergent PDA phone that money can buy at the moment :vhappy:

I feel the same way too- it's not perfect but I dont think i can find another phone that will make me as happy as another more advanced palm based Treo.

I dont feel the urge to look at new phones like before :)
