"DVD Jon" bypasses AT&T activation process

Jon Lech Johansen, also known as "DVD Jon" for cracking the DeCSS routine that guards DVDs, has successfully fooled iTunes into giving access to the iPhone's iPod and Wi-Fi features without first registering an AT&T service plan.

The technique involves modifying hexadecimal values in the software and redirecting its requests away from an Apple server to a custom program, which convinces iTunes that the phone is ready to use.

The iPhone does not have phone capability, but the iPod and WiFi work.

it was my good fortune to meet up with paddy aka tomato
who told me of his fun with the iphone
after getting his kind assistance to help me unlock iphone
i sms-ed my pal who immediately got one for me

i wont be able to use it as a phone now
but it wont be long before some wise guy cracks it
anyway my thinking is
$820 is not bad for a phone, ipod...

hmm... that could be true...

Well, since actviation of the AT&T phone plans is done over iTunes, technically you don't need an AT&T plan once the phone is unlocked proper... Which I am sure would be soon.

However, I also believe that Apple will be releasing firmware updates pretty regularly, so it will be quite a hassle to keep unlocking the phone, unlike the phones that some people get unlocked from Japan...
