Got 1.4million pple go Orchard library meh?

    The library@orchard to close
    Posted: 25 July 2007 1652 hrs

The National Library's first downtown hub for bookworms,library@orchard is closing.

Library users will however find the next chapter for library@orchard, even better with the library re-opening in 2010 at *scape the youth community space and possibly another redeveloped site along Orchard Road.

The Ngee Ann City location for the Library will shut its doors by November 2007, because the lease on the premises isn't being renewed. However, books can still be returned at the bookdrop located at library@orchard until 15 December 2007.

Commenting on the plans to move, Dr N Varaprasad, Chief Executive of National Library Board said,"we are very excited about our move to the two new possible locations, which will help us to meet the evolving and diverse needs of the youths and instil a stronger sense of learning culture amongst them."

As the Orchard road location caters mainly to young people the National Library Board is consulting its young users on the development of the new space at *scape. "Ultimately, we want these two new spaces to not only build on the success of the original library@orchard but to scale new heights in reaching out to the young Singaporeans in the Orchard community” said Dr Varaprasad.

To commemorate the relocation of library@orchard the NLB will hold a series of public events and programmes over the next few months such as exhibitions, film screenings, talks and even ‘live’ performances by local bands and musicians.

To say "goodbye", the NLB will have a ‘Moving On’ party on November 30th.

The library@orchard first opened in 1999.

It was a milestone in NLB's history as it was the first niche lifestyle library, designed to attract young Singaporeans with its unique location at the heart of the Orchard Road shopping belt.

Together with an appealing ambience, thanks to the presence of music booths and a café, library@orchard managed to double its outreach, with an average of more than 1.4 million visitors per year. - CNA/sf

You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?

only free for Singaporean citizens & PRs...otherwise, foreigners gotta pay up to be a member. i remember it was only around $10+ (Normal membership) when i first signed up about 3yrs ago. now as of 1 July 07 kena ketuk for $40+ for Premium membership - no (cheaper) options.

so don't think that it's only your tax money that's funding the NLB.

but.......i am still willing to pay to be a member cos i'm an incurable bookworm + i feel that your S'porean NLB's collection is very good. well stocked & very conveniently located all around the country. can even order book to transfer over to a more convenient branch library. & now got BookCrossing too.

Aiya- its worth it lah- the most go and borrow more often.

I think the library is getting better and better. If only people using the library gets "better" too. So sad to see nice new books get tattered and abused so quickly!!

Was very happy to see the audio books cd collection getting better (slowly though ).

I think our library service is one of the best, if not the best in S.E.A??

If you consider the fact that each person goes about 17 times a year (once every 3 weeks =17 time for 52 weeks). It is about 85,000 only. Most do not go so often, but there are passing crowds.

Sad news. The library is a good complement to Kino.

The Orchard branch seems to have better collection of books compared to say Toa Payoh or even Bishan. Hope they will maintain that in the new location. Now doing book drop in Orchard will be more lay chay

1.4 million a year is very low wor. Considering that the monthly shopper traffic for Wisma/Ngee Ann City is about 1+ or 2 million a month...
